Small dogs have the same need to chew, chase and solve problems as big dogs, but with smaller mouths and teeth. The best toys are sized correctly, safe to chew and matched to what your dog enjoys most.
Choose the right size
A toy should be too big to swallow but small enough to carry comfortably. Toys designed for large dogs can be too heavy or hard for tiny jaws; toys for toy breeds are a good fit for Chihuahuas, Yorkies or Maltese. Balls should never be small enough to fit entirely in the mouth, as they can block the airway.
Types of toys
**Plush toys** Many small dogs love carrying and “killing” soft toys. Look for reinforced seams, and consider stuffing-free toys if your dog likes to tear things apart. Remove squeakers if they come out.
**Rubber chew and treat toys** Hollow rubber toys sized for small dogs can be stuffed with kibble, wet food or a bit of peanut butter (xylitol-free). They keep dogs busy and help with chewing urges.
**Puzzle toys and snuffle mats** Hide treats in puzzles with sliding pieces or in a fabric snuffle mat. Mental work tires small dogs as much as a walk.
**Fetch toys** Small, light balls, mini flying discs or soft throw toys suit indoor games.
**Tug toys** Small rope or fleece tug toys build a bond and burn energy. Play gently with small dogs’ necks and teeth, and teach a “drop it” cue.
**Interactive and motion toys** Treat-dispensing balls or toys that wobble keep dogs entertained alone, but supervise at first.
Toys that are risky for small dogs
- Toys with small detachable parts, eyes or bells that can be swallowed.
- Very hard chews like antlers, hard nylon bones or real bones, which can break small teeth.
- Rawhide for heavy chewers, which can cause choking or blockages.
- Strings, ribbons and rubber bands.
Inspect toys regularly and throw away damaged ones.
Keep it interesting
