A patio cover makes an outdoor area usable in midday sun and light rain, and can protect furniture. Options range from a simple umbrella to a solid roof that extends the house. The right choice depends on how much protection you need, your budget and local rules.
Patio umbrellas
The cheapest and most flexible option. Cantilever (offset) umbrellas keep the pole out of the way and can tilt with the sun. They need a heavy base and must be closed in wind.
Shade sails
Tensioned triangles or rectangles of fabric attached to posts or walls. They look modern, are relatively inexpensive and block a large share of UV. Most are water-resistant rather than waterproof. The anchor points must be very strong, because wind loads on a sail are considerable.
Retractable awnings
Attached to the house wall, they roll out when needed and retract to let in light or protect the fabric in storms. Manual and motorized versions exist, and some have wind sensors that retract them automatically.
Pergolas
An open frame of posts and beams, in wood, vinyl or aluminum. On its own, a pergola gives only partial shade. Adding climbing plants, a retractable canopy or slats increases shade.
Louvered pergolas
Aluminum pergolas with adjustable slats that can be angled for light and air or closed completely to shed rain. They are a premium option, often motorized.
Solid roof covers
A roof attached to the house or freestanding, made of aluminum, polycarbonate panels or the same roofing as the house. They give full rain protection and can support fans and lights. Polycarbonate lets light through but can trap heat.
Things to check before you build
- **Permits**: attached and permanent covers often need a building permit, and HOAs may have rules on materials and colors.
- **Drainage**: solid covers need gutters so water does not pour onto the patio or the foundation.
- **Snow and wind loads**: in snowy or hurricane-prone areas, the structure must be designed for them.
- **Light inside the house**: a deep cover can darken the rooms behind it.
